Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u2019objet de nombreuses publications jusqu\u2019\u00e0 tr\u00e8s r\u00e9cemment. Objet d\u2019une exposition \u00e0 New York en 2018 et d\u2019une autre exposition \u00e0 Fontainebleau au printemps dernier, la tenture suscite encore recherches et questionnements sur divers aspects comme les portraits, les sc\u00e8nes repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es, l\u2019origine bruxelloise de sa fabrication ou sa technique d\u2019ex\u00e9cution. Nous avons trait\u00e9 en particulier une tapisserie, celle dite le \u00ab\u00a0Jeu de la quintaine\u00a0\u00bb. Le paysage devient une part essentielle de celle-ci. Loin de Bayonne ou de Paris, les jardins et le panorama sont ceux de Bruxelles et de son palais. Le palais qui est haut perch\u00e9 et la ville en contrebas sont une caract\u00e9ristique essentielle des panoramas de Bruxelles r\u00e9alis\u00e9s au xvie si\u00e8cle dans une orientation Est-Ouest (fig. 2). Le panorama est une des composantes essentielles de la tapisserie qui, sans ce dernier, placerait la sc\u00e8ne du jeu de la bague dans un environnement inconnu, difficile \u00e0 interpr\u00e9ter. Cette source et ce moment pr\u00e9cis de la narration ont \u00e9t\u00e9 choisis pour \u00e9voquer un jeu de la bague au palais de Bruxelles. Les trois \u00e9l\u00e9ments centraux de ce jeu, \u00e0 savoir le mannequin en forme de dragon pivotant sur un axe et tenant un anneau suspendu au bout de la langue, le cavalier jouteur ainsi que celui qui s\u2019appr\u00eate \u00e0 le suivre figurent tous les trois sur un dessin d\u2019Antoine Caron.<\/p>\n<p>La figure d\u2019Henri III n\u2019est pas un simple portrait en pied. Elle se distingue des gravures qui furent r\u00e9alis\u00e9es d\u00e8s l\u2019accession d\u2019Henri de Valois au tr\u00f4ne de Pologne. Portant un habit \u00e0 la romaine, il devient un h\u00e9ros muni d\u2019une cape qui s\u2019enroule autour de ses \u00e9paules et qui est attach\u00e9e en formant une boucle. La forme et les couleurs de son costume rappellent celles du cavalier qui est en train de jouter.<\/p>\n<p>La figure au sein de l\u2019action \u00e0 laquelle elle participe directement, \u00e0 savoir le cheval et le valet qui le maintient, influence nettement la composition et impose un nouveau titre \u00e0 la tapisserie. L\u2019association de la tapisserie en question avec des festivit\u00e9s ayant eu lieu dans cette ville en 1565 et organis\u00e9es par la Cour du roi de France n\u2019a pas manqu\u00e9 d\u2019\u00eatre rappel\u00e9e et r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9e. Tant et si bien qu\u2019aucune analyse visuelle approfondie n\u2019avait eu lieu qui permette de remettre en question cette attribution.<\/p>\n<p>En r\u00e9alit\u00e9, le panorama en fond de perspective, d\u2019une envergure approchant le m\u00e8tre, est caract\u00e9ris\u00e9 par un palais perch\u00e9 haut sur un promontoire et des \u00e9tendues basses de la ville de Bruxelles implant\u00e9e entre ses deux enceintes. Or, le mannequin sur la tapisserie est un dragon qui pivote sur un axe vertical, muni d\u2019une queue o\u00f9 pend un poids allong\u00e9 servant \u00e0 d\u00e9stabiliser le jouteur en retour. Le dragon tient au bout de la langue un anneau, qui fait office de bague, dans lequel doit se ficher la lance du jouteur. Elle appartient \u00e0 un groupe qui signifie \u00ab\u00a0le d\u00e9part\u00a0\u00bb,<br \/>\nrep\u00e9r\u00e9 sur une cinquan-<br \/>\ntaine d\u2019\u0153uvres allant du xiiie au d\u00e9but du xviiie\u00a0si\u00e8cle (fig. 6). La posture du h\u00e9ros au pied \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9trier n\u2019a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 identifi\u00e9e comme telle jusqu\u2019ici sur la tapisserie. Pourtant, elle figure au premier plan de la sc\u00e8ne, rel\u00e9guant la joute, les<br \/>\njardins et le panorama aux second et troisi\u00e8me plans.<\/p>\n<p>En conclusion, combiner les trois indications pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es plus haut nous permet d\u00e9sormais de comprendre qu\u2019\u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 du jeu de la bague, le th\u00e8me principal de la tapisserie est celui du d\u00e9part d\u2019Henri\u00a0iii, et qu\u2019en pr\u00e9cisant les autres plans de l\u2019action, le titre s\u2019en voit compl\u00e9t\u00e9 et renforc\u00e9.
